The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) offers a 1 year long Clinical Burn Fellowship. The position entails comprehensive training in providing clinical care to burned patients. The USAISR is the only burn center in the US Department of Defense and admits hundreds of burn patients annually consisting of military personnel and civilian emergency patients from South Texas. USAISR is verified as a Burn Center by the American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons. Fellows will participate in resuscitation, operative treatment, critical care, rehabilitation, and burn scar reconstruction under the direction of board certified general surgeons who specialize in burn, trauma, and surgical critical care. Clinical Burn Fellows generally work with three to four residents from both military and civilian training programs. The fellowship also offers the physician opportunities to excel in teaching and research. Eligible candidates include those with an MD or DO degree, at least 2 years of prior clinical training in surgery, and
a medical license from any of the US state medical licensing boards. The position is salaried at $45,000 per year. This fellowship is currently not approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the U.S. Department of Defense Office of Graduate Medical Education. A diploma and a letter of completion are provided to those who successfully complete the program.
